The symptoms: After installing the new distributor and misc parts, while timing, the gun was indicating that spark isn't getting where it should be. Since then the car at idle will run fine for a bit, but then finds what I can only describe as a lump, idle falls a bit, then comes back to normal speed, then repeats the process all over again. At load, at anything more than partial throttle, the engine stumbles, and doesn't want to rev. It seems to do this at all engine speeds, and at wide open throttle, the shaking is rather hard and can be felt throughout the car.

At this point I have a swaped distributor, new rotor, new cap, new plug wires and new plugs. The car has been timed, and if I remember is set at 0 degrees advance. My next guess is to rebuild my old distributor with the parts from the new one that I have, as the only thing that has changed since the car was parked is the distributor. Anyone have any other suggestions? Tricks to get the distributor taken apart? Thanks as always folks.

Have you checked all of your vacuum lines? I've never had the problem at load that you describe, but I did have a vacuum line that was dry rotted and caused an idle problem exactly like what you describe.

It seems that your cam is one tooth off, which could result in several degrees from TDC

I would suggest you to align again the crank at the 0 mark, then the cam with the top mark (forgetting about the distributor for now).

Start with the belt at the crank, keeping hand tension (so you don’t have an extra teeth left from the pulley), after you managed to get it trough the cam, then rotate the engine at least 360 deg. to verify that the both marks are still at 0 at the crank and at the mark on top, then tighten the adjusting bearing’s nut.

Then just drop the distributor in, pointing to the # 4 cylinder and lastly you can set the timing to 10 degrees.

Having already replaced the coil wire and made sure that the wire is fully seated in the coil, the most likely reason for this is too much secondary voltage. The coil will produce upwards of 30KV if needed, but in practice it only makes about 12-15KV.. it only produces enough to jump the plug gap. If you had an electically open plug wire or coil wire it would cause this. But you have replaced them. The next thing I would check is the phasing of the distributors reluctor with the rotors alignment at the distributor cap. In other words, when the poles of the reluctor line up, the distributor rotor must be in the general vicinity of a contact in the dist cap! I have seen the reluctor become twisted on the shaft, and cause this problem. Compare with your other distributor and cap. Also make sure the firing order is correct: 1-3-4-2... the design of the cap makes it easy to confuse this.. lastly, the ignition timing should be 10 degrees at idle.. make sure that the timing advances when you speed the motor up.. about 35 degrees total (I think)and check that with the vacuum line disconnected so you are checking the centrifugal advance. If I advance more than 35 degrees (45 for example) Will I have more power at the bottom or top end? I know that you have to sacrifice either one.

Also the way you described (easy & very clear),

I am curious because I am running 10 degrees (static), the car runs very well but it seems to run out of steam at about 5500 rpm's or so.

So I wanted to try 15 degrees static, and I was wandering what to expect from advancing the timing this much with the stock cam.

A while ago, I was using a FAZA 40-80 cam, and I remember running at 15 degrees to have a little more torque at the bottom end.

It may not tolerate 15 without pinging or possibly being hard to start... It tends to give them a little more bottom end. The stock motor reaches it's power peak at 5500, so this is pretty normal.

with 45 deg, you will have more power neither at the bottom nor at the top end. You will get less power, detonation, and potentially engine damage.

Something between 10 and 15 deg will give you good performance, but checking the advance at higher rpm is a good test of your advance system.

I meant 45 deg at 4000 rpm , total advance versus 35 that is the average (vacuum and mechanical)

I guess I am trying to understand what's really going with the timing, perhaps I wanted to learn the difference between static and full advance.

Reading your comments, I understand now that you cannot adjust the timing while is totally advanced.

Perhaps I have to go back to timing ABC, before attempting to play with it!

your distributor has a certain amount of centrifugal advance. When you rev up, this will kick in and add to the static setting of 10 deg or whatever it may be. Let's assume that your centrif. adv is 25 deg. If you set your timing at 45 deg at 4000rpm, this means that your static setting is now 20 deg. This is too much for the low end, just as the 45 is too much for the high end.

It may be an obvious question but I had never used an adjustable light.

I just looked up the dist specs for a FI motor, and the mechanical advance in the distributor should give 16 to 20 degrees advance at 3500 rpm. This is in addition to the stock 10 degrees of static advance for a total of 26 to 30 degrees advance at 3500 rpm. An advance light will allow you to check this. Do the above tests with the vacuum line disconnected! The vacuum advance provides an additional 12 to 16 degrees advance under cruise conditions. And yes, setting the static timing to 12 to 15 degrees does seem to improve performance. Don't go any further, and do listen for sounds of detonation. Good luck,

I went ahead and re-built the distributor, using the body from the one that was in the car, and the "insides" of one of the donor pieces.

Additionally, and this is the funny part, I took the ignition ecu thing off and noticed that there were some short out going on in the connector to the box itself. How Deven, you ask, could this be? Well my friend, maybe because the brain was at one point submerged in water, of course!

Whomever designed these little covey holes that the box sits in, and the monkey that decided on the spark plug placement, should be shot and hung, in no particular order. The drainage hole for where the brain sits was completely plugged of course, and presumably had been for as long as I have had the car. I do feel like an idiot for not checking that thing out earlier, but believe me, it wasn't always filled with water. Whatever - the car runs again. Time for my header and the Stupertrapp.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->It is a rather common problem for the ECU plug to get wet, unfortunately, because the compartment can often leak water in through the firewall, dripping down wires that come in from the engine bay etc. My '80 X would not run right at one point, and it turned out to be that the big plug on the ECU was not snapped down on both ends, just one, so was only making intermittent contact. But when I went to remove it I noticed there was some corrosion on the plug and terminal, and dried water marks indicating the thing had been wet many times. Glad you got the beastie firing!
