I put a replacement distributor, new rotor and new cap in the X. While the new parts were enough to get the car moving, and almost more importantly, moved out of hostile territory (towing order), something is still awry.
There is a terrbile amount of spark that seems to be coming directly off of the coil. I tried to do a little trial and error, replacing my old coil wire that ran to the dist - same result. Took out my old coil, replaced with a spare Bosch blue coil and still using new plug wire - same result. I have now ordered a whole new set of plug wires, in the hopes that my tired old ones are the culprit, but I suspect that something else might be wrong. Anyone have any ideas about the source of my extracurricular spark? Should i try to translate it into horsepower? Thanks all

I already swapped the ECU, have new wires, plugs, cap, rotor etc. with no luck, I even swapped the coil as well.
Also I disassembled the distribuitor, cleaned the mechanical advance and adjusted the magnetic pick up,which according to the book is whithin specs (ohms range)
When I replaced the ECU, I noticed some green powder on the connector on the last two terminals (I believe for the water temp sensor), I cleaned the connector properly but the misfiring continues.
Does somebody may have a suggestion on what else to check?

I have not checked the fuel pressure, but if I keep the gas open it does produce power through the rpm range, but you could hear a slight misfiring from the engine and sometimes you can also feel it at the pedal.
I don't know if I am being clear here or not, but the misfiring is also at an even rpm's (for example at 4500 constant rpm's)
I am considering on swapping the electronic ignition as well to see if has any effect on it. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I doubt that it would cause a misfire. I'm sure that you could use one from another car with Bosch ignition without any problem. Good luck,

Capacitors are measured in MFDs or "microfareds". There is a such thing as a capacitor tester... but I have never seen one used in the automotive industry.
Most just replace them when they replace the points and I have NEVER seen one shorted... not a contributor to a mis-firing trouble. But it sure could!
Its possible that the capacitor suppliers do list the "size" and wattage rating in their catalogs... or should be able to give that info to you.
I'm sure you'll find one compatable and it can even be mounted OUTSIDE the distributor if need be.
It also would eliminate or prove it good for little money.
I haven't read the entire "thread", but I assume you replaced the points and tried "adjusting out" the miss with point timing, along with vacuum and mechanical advances...
Secondly... a dielectric grease is one that CONDUCTS!

If it was breaking down or shorted it could cause a problem... swap it... better yet, just TAKE IT OFF, to prove if its contributing to the miss-fire.

I put a replacement distributor, new rotor and new cap in the X. While the new parts were enough to get the car moving, and almost more importantly, moved out of hostile territory (towing order), something is still awry.
There is a terrbile amount of spark that seems to be coming directly off of the coil. I tried to do a little trial and error, replacing my old coil wire that ran to the dist - same result. Took out my old coil, replaced with a spare Bosch blue coil and still using new plug wire - same result. I have now ordered a whole new set of plug wires, in the hopes that my tired old ones are the culprit, but I suspect that something else might be wrong. Anyone have any ideas about the source of my extracurricular spark? Should i try to translate it into horsepower? Thanks all

One of the screw terminals on the coil should be tied to both the capacitor (silver can bolted to the firewall) and one side of the resistor. I already swapped the ECU, have new wires, plugs, cap, rotor etc. with no luck, I even swapped the coil as well.
Also I disassembled the distribuitor, cleaned the mechanical advance and adjusted the magnetic pick up,which according to the book is whithin specs (ohms range)
When I replaced the ECU, I noticed some green powder on the connector on the last two terminals (I believe for the water temp sensor), I cleaned the connector properly but the misfiring continues.
Does somebody may have a suggestion on what else to check?

I have not checked the fuel pressure, but if I keep the gas open it does produce power through the rpm range, but you could hear a slight misfiring from the engine and sometimes you can also feel it at the pedal.
I don't know if I am being clear here or not, but the misfiring is also at an even rpm's (for example at 4500 constant rpm's)
I am considering on swapping the electronic ignition as well to see if has any effect on it. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Capacitors are measured in MFDs or "microfareds". There is a such thing as a capacitor tester... but I have never seen one used in the automotive industry.
Most just replace them when they replace the points and I have NEVER seen one shorted... not a contributor to a mis-firing trouble. But it sure could!
Its possible that the capacitor suppliers do list the "size" and wattage rating in their catalogs... or should be able to give that info to you.
I'm sure you'll find one compatable and it can even be mounted OUTSIDE the distributor if need be.
It also would eliminate or prove it good for little money.
I haven't read the entire "thread", but I assume you replaced the points and tried "adjusting out" the miss with point timing, along with vacuum and mechanical advances...
Secondly... a dielectric grease is one that CONDUCTS!
